The way of a Leader is to make people around you feel safe.
A coach should develop communications skills to ensure that they have the best environment for development of each player.
The first rule of communications is listening. Listen and really dial in to that person and what that person says and then ask the prober questions to ensure you understand what the player really means and where they stand.
If the player leaves by any circumstance or the player goes out from the written agenda and there is some kind of conflict this will be in my mind a failure that the leader must take responibility for. Might even be that the other players are reacting on this persons behavior and there is a conflict – the leader is to blame not the player. If you can not come to an understanding and solve the conflict then best way for the group is to make this player leave. Still, you as a leader have failed and you need to evauluate your self and take actions for you own development as an leader. In all cases it starts with your communications skills. I also think the player in conflict needs to have an understading of how communication works and what could go wrong with poor communication. Hopefully both the leader and the player can be humble and understand that they need to develop.
The scenario above could only happen because the leader didn´t made this player feel safe in the environment he or she is in and be a part of the group. The leader must take the role of a leader and always be the one that initiate communication.
I’ve met a lot of head coaches that doesn’t talk to players or don’t give them a reason for why they don’t play and further more doesn’t develop and coach them well. The coaches job should be to grow and develop players and not destroying them. As coach you need to make sure that the players are in an environment where they can grow and develop.
